Some books transcend their authors. We read them, and think about them, and discuss them in classrooms, online, or amongst ourselves, and in doing so we often come to a general cultural conclusion about what they mean. But still, the more you know about the novels that form the basis of our literary culture, the better. I did this intentionally, of course. And I think this experiment proved helpful later on.
